ANTI-DOPING

ONLINE LEARNING

WADA's Anti-Doping e-Learning Platform (ADeL) contains key information on anti-doping that can be accessed by athletes, coaches, doctors, administrators, parents and anyone interested in learning more about clean sport.

All athletes registering for an IBU event must prove they have successfully completed an accredited Anti-Doping Education Programme. Further details can be obtained from the Biathlon Integrity Unit.

DANGERS OF DOPING

Most medications on the Prohibited List can be bought at a pharmacy, so they must be safe to use, right? Wrong! Medications are for people with specific health issues, not for healthy athletes. They were not approved to be used by healthy people in higher doses and in combination with other substances.

All medications have side effects, but taking them when your body doesn't need them can cause serious damage and destroy your athletic career.

METHODS

There are also Prohibited Methods of administering substances or manipulating your physiology that are banned. These methods can have negative effects on your body. For example:

  • Increased risk of heart failure, stroke, kidney damage and high blood pressure

  • Problems with your blood, such as infections, poisoning, overloading of white cells and reduced platelet count

  • Problems with your circulatory system

As with any drug, using a syringe to dope puts you at a higher risk of contracting infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.

RISK OF NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTS

Extreme caution is recommended regarding supplement use. A number of positive tests have been attributed to the misuse of supplements, poor labelling or contamination of dietary supplements.

The use of dietary supplements by athletes is a concern because in many countries the manufacturing and labelling may not follow strict rules, which may lead to a supplement containing an undeclared substance that is prohibited under anti-doping regulations. Taking a poorly labelled dietary supplement is not an adequate defence in a doping hearing.
